Color It! Material Guide

February 9, 2020 by reimagines

Our Color It! material is a great way to include your kids in decorating their space. What art supplies work best: markers, crayons, colored pencils, water colors? We’ve tried it all! Check out the results and our thoughts.

Color It! with Marker

Marker

We tried a Crayola Marker first. It was very pigmented and added a lot of color to the letters. However, it didn’t try very quickly and was easily smeared.

If you like the look of the Crayola Marker, I would recommend using a Sharpie instead. It makes a huge impact and does not smear once it dries.

Color It! with Crayon

Crayon

Next, we tried a Crayola Crayon. It worked really well on the Color It! material. It was not messy, so kids of all ages could use Crayons to decorate their letters. We really like the textured appearance the Crayon gives each letter. It definitely adds visual interest to the space.

Color It! with Colored Pencils and Fabric Markers

Colored Pencil

Colored pencils also worked really well and were easy to use. They are not as pigmented as Crayons and have a smoother finish. A light wash of color really pops against the black outline of the letter. The “I” on the left side of the picture is colored pencil.

Fabric Marker

We had some fabric markers laying around after a previous craft and decided to give them a try. They worked really well and were almost as pigmented as the Crayola Marker. The “M” in the picture is fabric marker.

Color It! with Craft Paint

Craft Paint

Next, we tried craft paint from the dollar store. The color built up on different parts of the letter to create a tie dye effect. The craft paint was really easy to use. If you have a younger child, give finger paints a try for a similar look.

Color It! with Watercolors

Watercolor

Last, we tried watercolors. This method was our favorite! It was easy to apply and dried quickly. Watercolors are beautiful and each letter looked unique.
